During the Great Depression my father lost his job and our house. He found employment with WPA and we went on relief.
Somehow we survived, but we did more than that. Our family of nine boys worked blue collar jobs and helped our parents pay off their debts. Eight of us served in the military in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Each of us earned our high school diplomas, three earned BS degrees in math and science, two did graduate work.
Without government aid, this would not have been possible. I sincerely believe government assistance in this and many other cases was not a handout but a solid investment in Americans who went on to contribute hugely and who paid forward the support received during the Great Depression.
