To the Editor:
The arrest and strip search of Indian Diplomat Devyani Khobragade demonstrates the serious consequences of U.S. insensitivity. Ms. Khobragade is accused of visa fraud and underpaying her maid.
Charges of this type, whether or not they are justified, are no reason to handcuff anyone much less subject them to a strip search. “Standard” procedures of this type are more than humiliating — they are degrading.
Applying them to anyone unless there is a clear reason given the nature of the charge against them is fundamentally inappropriate. Applying them to diplomats can, as this case demonstrates, have serious international consequences.
